How can you tell if a safe is good enough to withstand fires?  The best method is to actually look at the safe specifications or ask the salesperson good questions.  They should know the exact answers or else they might be hiding something.    You want to look at the fireboard protection along with the thickness/density of the steel or metal.  The more, the better.  A thicker steel wall will withstand much fiercer fires.  The seal is also an important part to look at since it is the “weakest” part of the safe where fires will enter.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that no gun safe is absolute in its protection.  Everything has its weakness.  But for most purposes, you can look at its fire rating and figure out what you need. Average fires at home range from 600-1,300  degrees so you would likely want to get a safe with at least 1,300 degree protection for 1 hour.
